New guidelines do apply to child support modification petitions

As you may know, the Massachusetts Child Support Guidelines were recently revised after a standard review that takes place every four years. The new guidelines just went into effect on Aug. 1.

How (and why) to take the high road in co-parenting after divorce

In any breakup that involves children, everyone hears the same message: don’t put your kids in the middle of your conflicts with your ex. What many people expect to happen is that they will come out of family court with a physical and legal custody order and a parenting plan -- typically one negotiated ahead of time. It seems pretty straightforward, and if everybody just sticks to the plan, there shouldn’t be much conflict, right?

Iverson's ex-wife files suit for serious child custody violation

Former NBA star Allen Iverson played for Denver Nuggets, the Detroit Pistons, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Philadelphia 76ers, winning many awards over the course of his career until he retired in 2010. He was also divorced that year from his wife and the mother of his five children, but it appears he won't be winning any awards for positive co-parenting this year.

Group of women leaders seeks gender equity in child custody

A somewhat surprising group of women with national prominence has founded a new family law advocacy group called Leading Women for Shared Parenting, or LW4SP, with the goal of bringing greater gender equity to child custody and parenting time decisions in family courts. The national, invitation-only group, which includes such diverse woman as a former president of the National Organization for Women and the ultra-conservative Phyllis Schlafly, was founded last month here in Massachusetts and plans to hold its official launch on Father's Day.

People in Massachusetts know that divorce is probably not the ideal situation for themselves or their children. But, for many families, it's simply a fact of life and they do what they can to make the process as bearable as possible for everyone involved.

When alcoholism interferes with parenthood

People in Massachusetts may have seen a recent news article about the pressures and hardships of dealing with an alcoholic spouse, and how these pressures can be even more pressing for married couples with children. Alcoholism can not only destroy a marriage, it can cause terrible problems for the family, especially the children. Alcoholism can also be a problem when it comes to determining child custody and visitation rights for an alcoholic parent.

What you can learn from Katy Perry's divorce

Katy Perry, the artist behind many songs in heavy rotation on Lexington radio stations like "The One That Got Away" and "California Gurls," recently announced that she was separating from her husband, British comedian Russell Brand. Brand was actually the one filed for divorce after the two, who married in October 2010, had been married for about 14 months.
